Lifting the Lid on the Mobile Networks
Tommy Lowe
Monday 20th September 2004, 7:45pm

Global telecoms networks, and more recently mobile phone networks in particular, have become an increasingly important part of our lives. The rather tenuous connection with ROUGOL is that large parts of the infrastructure involved, and almost all of the hand-held devices involved, use ARM processors.

Tommy Lowe has worked in this industry for several decades, in roles ranging from voice telecoms engineer, to project managing the telecoms infrastructure for the UK headquarters of the world's most successful but arguably least well liked software company.

In his spare time, Tommy was co-founder of the RISC OS North West User Group (RONWUG), and has been a committee member of ROUGOL since its inception. Needless to say, he's a keen RISC OS user, with a StrongARM Risc PC running RISC OS Select.

PART ONE - A brief look at how the mobile networks work.

  • What your phone says about you.
  • What your SIM card says about you.
  • We know where you are - always......
  • So, you really DO want to make that call.
  • Return home from abroad on a CAMEL.
  • PART TWO - How to get cheap calls to mobile phones.

  • Pathway to profit, but the USA is not happy.
  • "The way we were"
  • How to really upset the mobile operators - all of 'em
  • Building a DIY solution
  • Operating a DIY solution
  • Mobile Warez
  • The Master has spoken - "but just what did he say?"
  • Tommy will be using RISC OS, video projection and a flip chart to illustrate his talk, so it is certainly going to be a very interesting evening.
