NEXT MEETING

DATE:   Monday 18th May 2026
(ROUGOL meets on the third Monday of each month)
SUBJECT:   ARX and the Acorn Palo Alto Research Centre
PRESENTER:   Jim Mitchell
TIME:   7:45pm (although ROUGOL members start arriving at the pub from 6.30pm and the Zoom meeting will open at 7.30pm)
VENUE:   Upstairs in the Petworth Room at The Duke of Sussex public house, 23 Baylis Road, SE1 7AY, and also online via Zoom.

This month Acorn alumni Jim Mitchell will be Zooming in from his home in California. Jim managed the ARM development team and was head of the Acorn Research Centre in Palo Alto, where the original planned (but failed) Archimedes operating system ARX was being developed. Very little has ever been heard about what happened there, so this is a unique chance to find out all about it.

Before that he worked for 12 years at the legendary Xerox PARC where ethernet, laser printers, file sharing, the WIMP paradigm, and many more computing concepts we now take for granted were first developed. Later he worked for Sun and was responsible for the development of Java. Read his biography on Wikipedia.

He's a computing giant and we are very excited to have him joining us :-)

The usual arrangements

Meetings are free and everyone is welcome, no booking required, just turn up at the pub. Zoom attendees contact us for the link. (If you have attended any of our previous Zoom meetings, it is the same link)

The Duke of Sussex is easily accessible by public transport from in and around London and the south east, and serves a wide range of food and drinks. All meetings benefit from a large screen display, so everyone should have a great view.

To be informed about future meetings, please join the mailing list. Everyone on the mailing list will be kept informed of these and other ROUGOL initiatives.
